Nineteen

The next day, I was anxious to see Dylan to discuss the seed of a plan that had formed in my mind last night.

"You look better," he said.

"Thanks." I barged in, feeling well-rested and well-loved, a heady combination.

"So you actually succeeded in getting him to keep his hands to himself?"

"Mostly," I answered with a smile.

Dylan nodded, then led the way upstairs, where we settled in his sister's room.

"More movies today?" he asked, cocking a brow.

"Yes, definitely. But first, I actually wanted to ask you something..."

"Yes?"

"If a person, er, a ghost wanted to travel to Los Angeles, how would they go about doing that?"

His dark eyes stared at me. "Why?"

"Um, let's just say I want to help James with something," I said, grimacing. "I mean, how do you get to Alaska to see your brother?"

He laughed. "You wouldn't believe me if I told you."

"What? C'mon, now you have to tell me." I gave his shoulder a good nudge.

"All right. Since I have to," he said, his lips curving up into a mischievous grin. "Just imagine it. And you're there."

I jumped up from the bed. "You're kidding me."

He blinked, vanished for a second, then suddenly reappeared back into view. "There. I just went to Paris and saw the Eiffel Tower."

"No way! You did not! Are you serious?"

"Absolutely."

I laughed at the ridiculousness of it. "But why didn't you tell me this earlier? We could have gone on a safari yesterday. I could have checked out Buckingham Palace." My mind whirled with all the places I wanted to see and could possibly see, all the cities I'd never been to in my shortened real life.

"Because..." Dylan said. "I don't think you're quite ready."

"What do you mean?"

"I mean, I don't think you can do it yet. It takes a certain amount of strength."

"Oh." Defeated, I fell back onto the bed. "I didn't realize that."

"It just takes some time."

I stared at the ceiling, looking for answers. "I guess I'll have to do it the old-fashioned way and take a plane," I eventually realized.

"I've done that a few times. Once, I was in China and so exhausted that I had to take a plane back. I tried so hard but just couldn't do it on my own."

His story gave me a spark of hope, though, and I pounced on it. "Can I at least try? If it doesn't work, it simply doesn't work, right? I won't disappear forever or anything, right?"

"Right. You'll just open your eyes and still be in the same place. Want to try?"

"Yes!" I jumped up again, but fear flooded me, making me wonder if I should. "But..."

"But what?"

"Will you go with me?"

"Oh, I guess so." Dylan flashed a wide grin then grabbed my hand. "Okay, where in LA?"

"UCLA. Wherever the recruiting offices are."

"Ah, I see where this is headed. Now, close your eyes, hold on tight, and think hard—UCLA athletic department."

And I did just that…

"Open your eyes, Gemma."

My eyes flew open. Unbelievable! In less than a second, we had left the dreary late fall of Colorado and arrived on the sunny and beautiful UCLA campus.
